Sugar Land is evaluating the instauration of futuristic transportation system.

Date:

Sugar Land is in the exploration phase of an innovative transportation system that seeks to transform the way its residents move around the city.

In partnership with Swyft Cities, the local government is exploring the possibility of introducing a gondola system known as Whoosh, which promises to offer a streamlined and direct transportation service between key areas, such as Sugar Land Town Square and the emerging Lake Pointe district.

Advantages of the Whoosh system

Unlike traditional gondola systems that operate at scheduled stops, the Whoosh will employ electric vehicles that travel along fixed wires independently, allowing users to request on-demand rides via a mobile app.

“When you arrive at a station, you simply indicate where you want to go, and the system takes you directly, eliminating intermediate stops”, explains Melanie Beaman, head of transportation and mobility for the city. This solution would not only facilitate access to different areas, but is also presented as an alternative to costly and bulky pedestrian bridges.

The initial engineering and design phase of the system is estimated to cost around $12 million. The city is considering federal funding and exploring public-private partnerships to move forward with this ambitious project.

The primary goal of this initiative is to improve the quality of life for Sugar Land residents by creating a more accessible and attractive environment for those who wish to work, shop, or enjoy recreational activities in the city.
