Huawei to Drop Android Next Year with the Launch of HarmonyOS Next

Huawei confirmed that starting next year it will begin to implement its own operating system, HarmonyOS Next, as a replacement for Android in its devices. This decision is part of the company’s efforts to adapt to the restrictions imposed by trade tensions between the United States and China.

The Transition from Android to a Proprietary System

The presentation of the Huawei Mate 70 series, will be launched next month in China. During that presentation, the company will reveal that these models are the first to use HarmonyOS Next. Currently, Huawei phones run HarmonyOS, a platform based on Android open source.

The transition to the new version of the operating system is scheduled for 2025. Although the company is still working on improve some aspects of the user experience.

Huawei‘s main challenge will be to ensure HarmonyOS Next‘s compatibility with mobile applications. This new system will not be able to run applications developed for Android. So the company is working on create its own ecosystem. Currently, Huawei has around 75,000 tools compatible with its operating system and aims to reach 100,000.

In addition to the operating system, Huawei is also focused on the production of its microprocessors. The Kirin 9020, designed and manufactured in China, will be the chip that will be integrated into the Mate 70 series, and will be a key component for the performance of HarmonyOS Next.

The operating system will have features such as Harmony Intelligent, an artificial intelligence-based assistant that will provide functionalities to improve interoperability between devices. And, optimize security and editing aspects.

This strategy seeks to reduce Huawei‘s dependence on foreign technologies, especially from the US.
