Trudeau Reinforces Border Measures After Meeting with Trump

Date:

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau assured then U.S. President-elect Donald Trump that his country will implement stricter measures at the shared border. The aim is to avoid the imposition of tariffs that could severely damage the Canadian economy.

Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, announced that Canada plans to introduce drones, additional helicopters and redirect personnel to strengthen border control. These actions are intended to ensure a higher level of security and respond to concerns raised by the United States.

Economy at Stake

With 75% of Canadian exports going to the United States, potential tariffs pose a significant threat to the economy. Trudeau insisted that such measures would hurt both countries due to the close integration of their economies, and hoped that Washington would understand the risks of moving forward with such a policy.

Trudeau and Trump: A Conciliatory Meeting

The meeting between Trudeau and Trump, held in Florida, addressed issues such as trade, energy and security. Despite previous tensions, the meeting was described as cordial and productive. Trump noted that the conversation made progress on key points for both nations.

Canada is seeking to balance its economic interests and diplomatic relationship with the United States as it prepares to implement promised measures in the near future.
