General Motors (GM) expanded the recall of heavy-duty pickups in the United States due to problems in the tailgate switches. This new recall includes more than 132,000 units of the 2024 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, adding to the 323,000 vehicles already recalled in February.
Risk of Tailgate Failure
The problem affects pickup trucks with manual tailgates and electric locking/unlocking systems. According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), water can seep into the electronic tailgate switches, which could cause them to unlock unexpectedly. This failure poses a hazard, as cargo could fall onto the road and cause accidents.
GM identified 237 cases in which the tailgate was accidentally opened. The company recommends that drivers verify that the tailgate is properly closed and secured before using the vehicle until repairs can be made.
Solutions Offered by General Motors
General Motors dealers will replace the exterior touch panel switches with more water-resistant models. This adjustment is intended to eliminate the risk of leakage and ensure safe operation.
