President of Concanaco Servytur

As President of the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur), I face challenges that demand decisive and strategic actions to protect and strengthen our sector.

The support of 257 chamber presidents, along with 650 delegations across 1,857 municipalities, enables us to systematically create more synergies and conditions essential for the development of our communities. Some of the key national agenda topics discussed in our council meetings include the following:

Tariffs on Commerce: Addressing International Threats

The recent announcement by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican imports poses a significant threat to the region’s economy. This measure could trigger a bilateral crisis, affecting consumers and businesses on both sides of the border.

In this regard, I have emphasized:

“Commerce can’t thrive in an atmosphere of hostility. We need to build bridges, not barriers.”

Retaliation, such as imposing tariffs on U.S. goods, could lead to inflation and hinder the economic exchange that sustains millions of jobs.

Our organization maintains communication with business chambers in the United States and Canada. While it is true that governments negotiate international agreements and treaties, particularly those focused on free trade, the involvement of business leaders is crucial. Otherwise, it would be like having the best stadium without any players.

The USMCA is not only about goods; it also fundamentally encompasses services that benefit populations across North America.

Piracy and Smuggling: Tackling Threats to the Formal Market

Piracy and smuggling are burdens that destroy formal jobs and damage the quality of commerce. At Concanaco Servytur, we work alongside the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI) (Mexican Institute of Industrial Property) , the National Customs Agency, and the Tax Administration Service (SAT) to combat these practices. On this issue, I have stated:

“Piracy doesn’t just steal revenue; it also erodes trust in our economy. Urgent, decisive, and coordinated action is needed.”

Our commitment is clear: eradicate the illegal entry and distribution of products to protect the formal economy and its positive impact on local communities.

Tourism at Risk: Addressing the Cruise Ship Tax Debate

Tourism, one of the most important sources of income for coastal regions, faces the uncertainty of a proposed tax on cruise ships. This sector, which generates a steady flow of foreign currency, has raised its concerns. I have underscored:

“Tourism should be a driver of growth, not a source of fiscal conflict. Let’s work together to ensure a model that benefits everyone.”

I am confident that constructive dialogue with authorities will help prevent a measure that could harm this vital industry.

Unity is Key

Now more than ever, the unity of the tertiary sector is essential. I have called on all stakeholders to remain steadfast and aligned with positive actions. With leadership and innovation, we can overcome these challenges and emerge stronger.

As Sun Tzu once said:

“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.”

At Concanaco Servytur, we are determined to turn these challenges into opportunities, leading with vision and action to secure a bright future for commerce, services, and tourism in Mexico.
