Sustainability and Business: Navigating a Shifting Regulatory and Strategic Landscape

Date:

The global business landscape faces unprecedented change due to increasing regulatory pressure on sustainability issues. New European regulations not only demand greater transparency, but also redefine the responsibilities of organizations. It prompt them to transform their operations in a holistic manner.

Corporate Sustainability: More than an Obligation

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) marks a turning point for companies with more than 500 employees. This regulatory framework, in the process of being adapted to national legislation, requires clear reports on sustainable policies and actions, and demands a real commitment to transparency. However, the challenge is not limited to compliance: companies must rethink their strategic approach to integrate sustainability at all levels.

Ruth Fernández, from Elecnor’s Sustainability Committee, highlights the need to involve the entire organization in this process. Beyond a specific department, compliance requires active collaboration from employees to suppliers.

A Complex Regulatory Scenario

The CSRD is not the only regulation that companies must consider. Regulations such as the Climate Change Act and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD) add complexity to the regulatory environment. Navigating these multiple requirements can be confusing and raises the need for clear and well-defined strategies to avoid non-compliance.

Adapting to regulations is just the beginning. Enrique Aznar, of the IE-Elecnor Knowledge Hub, stresses that data collection should not remain at a basic level. Using these indicators to measure social and environmental impacts can open up opportunities for innovation and improvement. It can also reinforce respect for human rights along value chains.

The new guidelines should not only be seen as a legal challenge, but as a driver for business transformation. By integrating responsible practices into their business model, companies can not only comply with the standards, but also position themselves as leaders in ethics and sustainability.
