Tesla Expands in China with New Shanghai Energy Megafactory

Tesla strengthens its position in the Chinese market by launching testing of its energy storage megafactory in Shanghai. This facility, located in the Lin-gang Special Area, is preparing to start mass production of its Megapack units in the first quarter of 2025. This, to follow construction that began in May 2024.

A Strategic Commitment to Sustainable Energy

The factory will have the capacity to produce 10,000 Megapacks per year, equivalent to 40 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. This breakthrough underscores the importance of the energy business for Tesla. Which generated $2.38 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2024 alone, registering 52.4% growth versus the previous year.

Shanghai, a Key Player in Tesla’s Expansion

The city continues to be a strategic hub for Tesla in China. The Gigafactory, which began operations in 2019, recently celebrated the production of the one millionth Model 3 vehicle. That, destined for the United Kingdom.

In 2023, this facility produced more than 900,000 vehicles, contributing to Tesla’s impressive total of 1.7 million units sold in China over the past decade.

With this mega-factory, Tesla not only strengthens its presence in the Chinese market, but also reaffirms its commitment to energy innovation and sustainability in one of the world’s most competitive markets.
