The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, provides support to low-income individuals and families to purchase essential food items. Under this program, recipients can purchase items such as fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, cereals and non-alcoholic beverages. As well as seeds and plants to grow food.
In Texas, households that have members over the age of 60 or persons with disabilities have the option to participate in the Texas Simplified Application Project (TSAP). This program speeds up the application process and allows recipients to receive benefits for three consecutive years, rather than just six months.
However, adults without children in their household, between the ages of 18 and 52, can only access benefits for three months every three years.

It is important to note that while SNAP benefits are valid for a wide variety of food items, they cannot be used for non-food items, such as tobacco, alcohol, supplements, prepared foods or pet food.
Beneficiaries receive their funds through a card known as the Lone Star Card, which functions like a debit card and can be used to make purchases at approved stores. The amount allocated to each recipient depends on factors such as household size, income and monthly expenses.
