The United States government imposed sanctions on Iranian and Russian entities on Tuesday, accusing them of attempting to influence the 2024 presidential election. According to the Treasury Department, these actions are part of a coordinated effort to generate political tensions in the country and manipulate U.S. voters.
Disinformation and Influence Operations
The Treasury noted that one of the sanctioned entities is linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while the other is connected to Russia’s military intelligence agency. These organizations have reportedly been conducting influence operations since at least 2023. The Cognitive Design Production Center, in particular, was singled out for attempting to manipulate public opinion through disinformation campaigns and the creation of fake content, such as the well-known “deepfakes.”
United States: Manipulation of Political Content
The Moscow Center for Geopolitical Studies, another implicated entity, was also involved in disseminating misinformation about presidential candidates, including a manipulated video with unsubstantiated accusations towards one of the 2024 vice presidential candidates. Although it was not specified who was the target of these accusations, the United States government stresses that these types of interventions are a direct attempt to divide society and manipulate the country’s democratic processes.
Acting Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Bradley Smith reaffirmed the United States commitment to protect its electoral institutions and processes from external threats.
