The removal of fact-checking by Meta, a concern for the Nobel Peace Prize

Date:

Mark Zuckerberg announced the decision to remove the fact-checking program from the Meta platform, something that Filipino journalist Maria Ressa, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, believes will lead to “dangerous times.”

The businessman also stated that this measure brings new policies closer to supporting freedom of speech. This rhetoric was previously used by Elon Musk following his acquisition of X, formerly Twitter.

One of the points both magnates share is their closeness to the elected president of the United States, Donald Trump. U.S. media reports suggest that Meta’s CEO made significant donations to the Republican’s campaign.

Meta removes its fact-checking program

Mark Zuckerberg removed the content verification program in the United States. He stated that it was because they “have been too politically biased and destroyed more trust than they have created.”

The proposal from Meta’s CEO regarding the absence of fact-checking is that people create community notes similar to those carried out on X.

What does the Nobel Peace Prize laureate say about Zuckerberg’s decision?

Ressa argues that Facebook’s creator’s decision is a show of support for Donald Trump. She added that this represents “extremely dangerous times” for journalism, democracy, and internet users.

“Mark Zuckerberg says it’s a matter of freedom of speech, and that is completely wrong,” the journalist said about Meta’s CEO’s decision.

She believes that the removal of fact-checking only benefits lies and rhetoric where “anger, fear, and hatred infect everyone on the platform.”

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate stated that this measure will create a world suitable for a dictator.

Donald Trump will assume the presidency of the United States on January 20, starting a term that will last until 2028.
